    Project Brainfart?

That’s what someone who sent me this link to Project Brainstorm, the RSCVA’s latest endeavor to involve the public in its decision-making. Or is it that the RSCVA is handing decision-making over to the public and still getting a percentage of hotel room taxes for the privledge? You be the judge! So far, there is exactly one idea in the RGJ.com forum made available for the project. It is indeed ironic that the favorite idea so far is to develop a permanent ice rink since the city of Reno seems to have stalled on its plans (AGAIN) to develop even a permanent seasonal structure for such a purpose at 10 North Virginia Plaza. ‘

So I have one question. Did the RSCVA pay a consulting firm to tell them to ask citizens what to do? And if so, was it as much as EDAWN paid for consultant to help them develop Reno’s “Can Do” brand which someone referred to as “the green tennis ball” campaign during a conversation the other day. I guess that’s one way for people to think about Northern Nevada’s development opportunitites. The Reno Can Do website isn’t even finished yet–there is nothing listed under “Business Climate,” “Quality of Life,” or “Data Center;” all central concepts for the city’s branding efforts wouldn’t you? I read a story on Idaho’s successful development story in this month’s Horizon Air Magazine (story is not online). I recommend it to the folks at EDAWN and anyone else interested in Reno’s economic development. It seems Idaho tops the list in several catagories thanks to entrepreneurial development, particularly in the areas of alternative energy and technology.
