kung fu grippe : nostrich: Summary:... →
“Thing is, every friend I have who’s a journalist says the same thing — they (understandably) hate that the quality of their work is suffering under a mandate to push out shit-tons of increasingly under-resourced, faster-deadlined, less chewy material, just so their publisher can drive empty page views and compete more effectively in the race to the bottom. Because, if you’re counting on raw...

Bon Appetit: 'Toxic' Bonus Yields 72% at Credit... →
Novel. I’m too clear if the return was due to the bankers being able to help the assets out of the dumps, or if it’s just chance that they happened to be holding ‘toxic’ assets that recovered. Either way, I think we should applaud Credit Suisse for not taking government money and owning their problem. That it came back (to this point) and became a positive is nothing I can...

Murakami "Akihabara Majokko Princess" with Kirsten... →
I don’t care much, nor understand the fascination with the Japanese cartoon stuff, but I do like Kirsten Dunst. This is a pretty cool video if only for a couple of things. 1) Kirsten Dunst, 2) McG is the director, 3) it’s shot gorgeously and edited even better.

Dullard Mush: Gibbons to Chat with Conservative... →
I wish I could be there. I was invited to the first, but he did it during work time, which I suppose is acceptable for some people, but I only got about two days notice. I had no idea another was going on.

Personally, if doing this kind of thing keeps more people working by keeping costs lower for employers, let’s get after it.

Green screened →
Pretty outstanding video showing some of the shots you’d have no idea were green screened before and after. It also drives home the notion that when using a green screen, you don’t have to fill the background with it…you just have to cover the back of the pieces of the shot you’ll actually be using. One scene the characters are walking on a sidewalk and the normal shot has...

How many people die from lack of health insurance? →
Megan McArdle has an excellent post on that question and here is her column. Here is one startling bit: To my mind probably the single most solid piece of evidence is this: turning 65—i.e.,…

How many people die from lack of health insurance? →
Wow. I wonder if this is a question that is even asked among members of Congress. It probably is, and the answer is such that it would wrest power from some very hungry hands. Therefore, it might actually be a safe conclusion to say that this struggle over health insurance is purely a struggle of politics. For some reason, that makes a lot of sense to me.

Confused Facebook users think ReadWriteWeb is the... →
This is entertaining for a little while. It reminds me of when people would search for famous people’s names, come across a blog post about that person, and write comments thinking that the author was that person. I guess we haven’t come that far after all.

It’s a good thing the RGJ sent a reporter to Vancouver. I mean, what would we do for coverage otherwise? And they’re in great financial shape, too, so spend away.

Why Taylor Swift Offends Little Monsters,... →
I gotta admit: I’m not a country fan, but I like Taylor Swift’s whole act. She seems very likable (SNL did that for me), she has genuine talent, and her stuff isn’t nearly as impossible to listen to as I wanted it to be. My daughter loves her stuff and I hear a lot of it. I wouldn’t buy it myself, but I can handle when it comes on in the car or it’s playing in the...

Sarah Palin Needs Help →
I’m not huge on the national politics thing anymore. I rarely pay that much attention to potential candidates who people love to hate, but the clarity on this post by Nate Silver is tough to argue. I’ve enjoyed reading Andrew Sullivan talk about what an idiot she s, only to have him talk about her genius after she spoke to the Tea Party people, but no one that I’ve seen has come...

Nevada lawmakers unhappy with overtime costs from... →
Very interesting. I was having this talk a week or so ago about the perception of state workers with regards to furloughs. When they were imposed, it was assumed that the same amount of work would get done. That’s how it was for me while at Tourism. Except the only way to actually handle the situation would be to have to cut services and duties by 4.6% or whatever. If that didn’t...
